Dr. Elaine Leung
Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Training Fellow, Institute of Cancer Sciences, University of Glasgow

Elaine has recognised the importance of connecting like-minded researchers since her undergraduate medical training. She established Glasgow Evidence-based Medicine Society (GEMS) in 2009 to support undergraduate medical students exploring research opportunities. She identified the lack of relevant career support for clinically-trained early career researchers (ECRs) when she started to pursue a PhD in gynaeoncology investigating the role of our immune system on the efficacy of anti-cancer (oncolytic) viral therapy.

Elaine hopes the Clinicians in Research Network (CiRN) will grow to become a vibrant and supportive community connecting clinicians in research in Scotland.

Dr. Mark Salji

Clinical Research Fellow, CRUK Beatson Institute, Institute of Cancer Sciences, University of Glasgow

Mark is a Clinical Research Fellow in Urology funded by the Medical Research Council. He is undertaking a PhD investigating the mechanisms underlying castration resistance in prostate cancer. Through the CiRN he hopes to help and encourage future generations of clincians starting out in their academic career.

Dr. Henry Däbritz

Clinical Research Fellow, CRUK Beatson Institute, Institute of Cancer Sciences, University of Glasgow

Henry was trained in haematology and oncology in Berlin, Germany, before moving to Glasgow to pursue a PhD in cancer metabolism. He has also gained clinical experience within the National Health Service, providing out-of-hour service as a haematologist. As a clinician trained outside the UK, Henry hopes his support for CiRN would help encourage local doctors-in-training to engage with the excellent research opportunities available for clinicians in Scotland. Henry tries to explore as much of Scotland as possible besides his research.

Dr. Antony Cousins

Clinical Research Fellow, Institute of Cancer Sciences, University of Glasgow

Antony (Tony) is a specialist trainee in Haematology in the West of Scotland. His research is to investigate the mechanisms of central nervous system involvement with childhood lymphoblastic leukaemia. He has a longstanding interest in the translation of basic science discovery into improvement in clinical outcomes in lymphoid malignancy.

Dr. Anna Laura Koessinger

Clinical Research Fellow, CRUK Beatson Institute, Institute of Cancer Sciences, University of Glasgow

Anna underwent neurosurgical training from 2011 until 2013 before she started her specialist training in pathology in Wuerzburg, Germany. She is now in her first year of her PhD investigating targeted therapies in glioblastoma, the most common and most malignant primary brain tumour. Anna plans to pursue her research besides her clinical work. In her opinion CiRN provides a perfect opportunity to connect researchers and clinicians in order to support their academic careers.

Dr. Dominik Koessinger

Clinical Research Fellow, CRUK Beatson Institute, Institute of Cancer Sciences, University of Glasgow

Dominik began his specialist training in neurological surgery in Wuerzburg, Germany in 2013. His focus of interest quickly moved to neuro-oncology. Therapeutic options in treating malignant brain tumours, especially glioblastoma, still remain poor. One of the major difficulties faced by neurological surgeons treating glioblastoma patients is the diffuse infiltration of the surrounding brain tissue. As Dominik wants to contribute to a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms, he started a PhD investigating the role of integrin trafficking in glioma invasion in October 2016.
